END OF YEAR SHOW

Kingston University Communication Design MA


To enhance visitors experience a collection of ‘Our stories’ videos are made telling more about the process of each work. This gives an insight to the process of reaching these outcomes for each and, some behind the scenes from developing the exhibition.
The podcasts are designed to be short videos which take you quickly through months of work and give you more than a polished narrative.



Alex Xiong
Chosen text: Harvesting Misunderstanding – Tino Mantarro, 2020

Alex Xiong's project is another interpretation of misunderstanding in cultural integration. He talks about the metaphors represented by the visual elements in his work, while he also gives the background of his historical story.

Claudia Chiavazza talks about the way she approaches visual language, experimentation with materials and how this leads to the outcome of the project.

Ell Flynn
Chosen text: Decolonising Design Education: Ontologies, Strategies, Urgencies - Decolonisign Education, 2018

Ell Flynn shared how she feels about the text and makes her design response to it. Through a sequence of visuals, she wants to draw attention to hierarchies in current institutions and teaching that reinforces dominant voices or racist thinking. Her works aim to challenge existing educational institutions and inspire students/educators to collaborate, reflect and act.

Jean Zeng
Chosen text: Harvesting Misunderstanding – Tino Mantarro, 2020

Jean Zeng documents the boundaries between different types of liquids, such as water, milk, oil, and poured acrylic. She uses all these liquids to imitate the process of personal evolution, the interaction of individuals with their environment, the ghetto in the mainstream, the contact between two cultures, and the different scales of misunderstanding that occur on the borders.

Lucy-May Turner
Chosen text: Harvesting Misunderstanding – Tino Mantarro, 2020

Lucy-May Turner talks about the process of making the project outcome, she explored different effects, colours and techniques to create the illegibility of the text. She also mentions how her background in fine art has influenced her and helped her with the project.

Shelley Huang
Chosen text: Decolonising Design Education: Ontologies, Strategies, Urgencies - Decolonisign Education, 2018

Shelley Huang shared his understanding of the text and why he chose a 3D form to design the project outcome. His project studied the boundary between colonial design and decolonizing design, trying to visualize the damage caused by colonial design from fundamental Chinese typefaces today.

Xiaomeng Shu
Chosen text: A School is a Building with a School in it – Paul Elliman, 2006

Xiaomeng Shu shared how she feels about the text and the design process of making the project outcome. She has a deep understanding of the text and explored different materials, forms and techniques to create design works based on her concept. She also mentions how she uses pictures that contains lots of memories and meanings to finish the project.

Yinuo Sheng
Chosen text: Decolonising Design Education: Ontologies, Strategies, Urgencies - Decolonisign Education, 2018

Yinuo Sheng talked about how he uses the text to make his design response and some challenges he met during the process. He tries to use three primary colours to derive the visual style of the whole work, and he hopes that in the process of reading the text, he can combine his images to give the author more emotional and visual feelings.
